The officer said Chad Daybell would label people light and dark, based on how much he believed a person had been taken over by evil. He testified that messages from Chad Daybell were sometimes sent from Tammy Daybell's account. In the countryside of Wales, several people are caught upon a raging storm and seek shelter from a mansion they encounter. There they meet the dysfunctional Femm family and their brutish servant, Morgan.

Tom Penderel, an American car salesman in London, delivers a car to an old mansion on Dartmoor for his eccentric roommate Casper Femm. Tom enters the house, and finds that his roommate Casper is dead. Tom is invited to stay at the house by members of Casper's family, including his twin brother Jasper, his cousins, the demure young Cecily and the seductive Morgana, and his Uncle Potiphar, who has been building an ark in anticipation of another great flood. The Old Dark House is a 1932 American pre-Code comedy horror film directed by James Whale.

Due to legal reasons, this film has never been syndicated to television. Saul's attempt at burning the house has caused little damage. Philip and Margaret leave to get an ambulance, while Gladys and William stay behind to tend to Roger's injuries. Upon awakening, Roger asks Gladys to marry him, and she happily kisses him in response.

These were nominally similar to haunted house films, excepting that Old Dark House genre rigidly eschewed any hint of the supernatural. Revisiting this film is a time to ponder its origins in a novel by JB Priestley (adapted by RC Sherriff and Benn Levy) and to see a literary lineage of the horror film, quite apart from Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley. You can see how the creepy brother Saul, lurking at the top of the house, is in a line that stretches from Charlotte Brontë’s madwoman in the attic to Thomas Harris’s imprisoned Hannibal Lecter, cunningly persuading people to do his bidding. And there’s a touch of Evelyn Waugh’s butler Philbrick from Decline and Fall as well.

The dinnertable scene with Ernest Thesiger insisting “Have a potato” is a classic, while his refusal to go up the stairs to get the lamp is hysterical. In the US, the film was originally released by Sony Pictures on an anamorphic 1.85 aspect ratio DVD, with the only extra being the original theatrical trailer. It was later paired on disc with Mr. Sardonicus and included in two separate William Castle box sets. The original disc was later reissued as a DVD-R burn-on demand release from Sony Pictures Choice Collection. The film has also been released on DVD in Spain, retitled La vieja casa oscura, both separately and as part of a William Castle box set. First Agatha Femm, Casper's mother, is discovered with her knitting needles stuck in her neck.
Daybell assigned many 'light' or 'dark' ratings and discussed them with family, officer testified
Many of the films in the Old Dark House genre had wonderfully stylised lighting scheme and directorial flourishes – fine examples being the 1927 The Cat and the Canary and The Bat Whispers – but ultimately they were films of occasional affect. On the other hand, in The Old Dark House James Whale creates a Gothic mood that permeates the entire film. The film is set contemporary and the tone is certainly a good deal more realist than the distorted European netherworld that Frankenstein took place in, nevertheless James Whale causes the film to slip into a stylised Gothic mood despite.

B. Priestley originally published under the name Benighted, and the new screenplay was written by Robert Dillon.[1] The opening title art was drawn by legendary macabre cartoonist Charles Addams,[2] whose signature is painted by a hairy hand. During dinner, the group are joined by Sir William Porterhouse and a chorus girl with the stage name Gladys DuCane, who also seek refuge from the storm. As the group chats by the fireplace, Gladys reveals her real last name is Perkins.
The Old Dark House review – James Whale’s horror classic still chills
They seek refuge at a nearby house where they are welcomed by the eccentric Horace Femm, who lives with his deaf and suspicious sister Rebecca and the mute, sinisterly hulking butler Morgan. They settle in for the night and are joined not long after by two other travellers, the wealthy industrialist Sir William Porterhouse and his girlfriend, dancehall girl Gladys Duquesne, whom Penderel takes an instant liking to. However, as the storm causes the power to go off and the brutish Morgan becomes menacingly drunk, they realise that the house holds secrets, including one family member, the mad pyrokinetic son Saul, who is kept locked in the attic. Tom Penderel, an American car salesman in London, delivers a car to an old mansion in Wales and discovers that his eccentric client, Casper Femm, is dead.
The cosmetic surgery, which consisted of Jacky getting a BBL, resulted in the 32-year-old having brain swelling and bleeding around her torso. In 1963, William Castle directed a comedic version of the story, which wasn't so well received as the original. Director – James Whale, Screenplay – Benn W. Levy, Additional Dialogue – R.C. Priestly [Priestley], Producer – Carl Laemmle, Jr., Photography (b&w) – Arthur Edeson, Makeup – Jack Pierce.
As the night continues, the troubled past of the Femm family starts to threaten our heroes, mainly in the form of the locked-up and dangerously crazy Saul. As an Old Dark House thriller goes, The Old Dark House is surprisingly light on plot – not much happens and there is little of the contorted twists and revelations that occur in other films of the genre. Some of the menaces present – Boris Karloff’s hulking butler – never do much. Both Ernest Thesiger and Eva particularly Moore’s characters drop off once the thrills start proper, while Charles Laughton is forgotten about the moment that Melvyn Douglas announces he is going to marry his girlfriend Lillian Bond. The characters are afforded such little development that we never even find out why the Wavertons are travelling through the backwoods of Wales with Penderel as company. All the film’s effect comes in James Whale’s mood and the droll playing of the cast.

Philip throws the lamp at Morgan, knocking him down the stairs. Lori Daybell, who police say Chad was romantically involved with when his wife was still alive, would often ask him for such ratings of people in her life. Her then-husband Charles Vallow, Tammy Daybell and Tylee and JJ were each labeled as "dark" before they were killed, according to testimony from earlier in the trial. Whale and his cast create some wonderfully crafted characterisations. Ernest Thesiger has a weirdly birdy presence and Eva Moore plays the gimlet-eyed old shrew issuing doom-laden warnings with great effect. Boris Karloff adds sinister presence by stumbling about in bearded, scarred face and saying nothing at all.
(Like Frankenstein, James Whale’s touch is so Gothic that one has to actively remind themselves that the film is set contemporary). Whale borrows the lighting effects from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919) and German Expressionist cinema, filling the film with starkly bared sets and ominous lighting schemes. The Old Dark House is a 1963 comedy horror film directed by William Castle. A remake of Universal's 1932 film of the same name directed by James Whale, the film is based on the 1927 novel by J.
